Mildmay flashed a smile at the girl, and said, "Please do. I'm sorry, I don't recognise you - I'm Mildmay Gorey."

Rose sat across from Mildmay. "Hello, I'm Rose," she said holding out her hand, which at first got tangled in her messenger bag. "Mildmay. That's an interesting name..."

He shook her hand briefly, his eyebrows twitching up in amusement at the formal greeting. "I was named after my great-grandfather. He was called Mild-May-Your-Suffering-Be-At-The-Hands-Of-The-Wicked. I, for one, am grateful they shortened it."
At that moment, his cat slinked from her place by the fireside and hopped into his lap, collapsing bonelessly as if the short journey had exhausted her.

Rose giggled. "Yes, I think it is best the shorted it. Imagine writing that on the top of papers."
Rose smiled at the cat that had just jumped onto his lap. "That cat is so adorable - I'm more of a dog person myself....I just wish I could have brought my dog to Hogwarts. But only toads, owls and cats are allowed..."

His hand moved over Messire's multicolour fur with absentminded affection. "I didn't like cats much when she found me. Now, I can't think of what it would be like without her." He gazed at the calico for a silent moment, then looked at Rose again with a languid smile. "What dog do you have? I wouldn't mind having a crup mysel-ah, ah! No crup!" Messire had sunk her claws into his thighs to express what she thought of the idea. "Effing cat," he grumbled with a wince as she pulled her sharp claws free.

Rose laughed loudly. "That's why I'm a dog person," she snickered. "They can actually understand what you're saying. And I have a shih tzu mix - she's only about 10 or 12 pounds."

A pinscratch frown creased the skin between Mildmay's eyebrows and he tilted his head. "I think it has more to do with her being my familiar than her being a cat. You think wild owls would carry letters a hundred miles, or a common rat would allow itself to be transfigured time and again for practice?"

Rose considered this. It did make sense...the number of times she had seen people in her classes transfigure their rats - and fail- and yet the rat never ran away. "Yes, I guess you're right there. There seems to be such a bond with magical animals and thier magical owners."
Sighing, Rose sunk back into the couch. "So, Mildmay, what year are you in? I'm a third year myself...you must not be. I've seen you around, but never in my classes."

He smiled at her again and said, "Well, hardly a surprise. I'm a fifth-year." He nodded at the other girl sitting with them. "Like Arya." He stroked his cat for a moment more, then picked her off her lap and stood up, putting her in the warm dent in the couch. He took his want from his pocket and did a quick little cleaning charm before asking, "I think it's time for dinner ladies. Will either of you like to accompany me?"

Arya was quite for the time Rose and Mildmay spoke. She continued to pet the cat and rub her ears. "My father is of wizarding blood," Arya added quickly.

"Me too, good thinking," said Rose, getting to her feet. "After you two!"

Mildmay grinned and pushed his hair back from his face. "Excellent! Come on." He led the way out of the common room, holding open the painting that hid the entrance and made his way up the flight of stairs to the ground floor.

Cedric came down with a smile on his face and his eyes ablaze with love. He had gotten an owl from Cho to which he quickly replied. She was busy, with work like he was, but it didn't matter to him. He'd wait for her to become unoccupied. Cedric left the common room to do what ever it is Prefects do.

Arya entered the common room along with her roommates. She let out a groan and sunk into a chair, kicking off her mary-janes. "That was exhausting," she rubbed her eyelids, shaking her head. "That whole episode was ridiculous..."
