Mildmay's grin slipped and his eyes widened. "That's a ball?" He said the word 'ball' like it was something repulsive.

"I guess it's a ball... spring time doesn't seem "ball" like for me," Arya said, "the other weird thing, is that the Slythein girls are in charge of planning it. That will be interesting."

"I thought it was just going to be - I dunno, a party or something." He groaned. "I hate balls. But if the Slytherins are in charge it's probably going to be traditional - they're all pureblood. This is going to be a nightmare."

"What's wrong with traditional? " Arya wondered, "you don't have to go to the ball, nobody is forcing you," she said, "but," she emphasized, "girls want to be asked... and boys are scarce at Hogwarts, mind you."

He shook his head and murmured, "It might not be the same here. Just, when I usually go to balls with my mother and her husband... it's just really unpleasant." His gaze dropped and his throat worked as he swallowed. Then he shook his head a little. "But it mightn't be the same here. I mean, there's halfblood and mudbloods here, so it's not like their usual immaculate pure blood crowd." He still didn't look very thrilled at the prospect.
"Oh, yeah. I'll go. A shortage of guys in the school? Really?"

"Yeaaaah," Arya couched and brushed her hair behind her ears, trying to not take offense when Mildmay brought up halfbloods. It wasn't a touchy subject, just how he said halfblood bothered her. But she decided not to say anything. "Well, this is filled with students, and friends, the only awkward thing would be seeing your professors dance with one another," Arya said. "As for shortage of boys, it seems like it... it only appears Slytherin boys present themselves to the public."

"Yes, but - there must be some reason behind it. I know there are other guys around here. Somewhere..." He looked around then, as if expecting to see the hundred or so missing male populous jammed into the nooks and crannies of the common room. "Hummm... what a mystery."
Mildmay tilted his head, and his smile from earlier crept back. "Seeing the teachers dance... what sort of moves do you think Professor Lupin has?"

"The girls are pretty crazy. If half of them are like Pansy, I don't blame them for hiding," Arya laughed. Mildmay then brought up teacher dance moves, and Arya imagined Lupin dancing. However... the image was not exactly pleasing, "none," she answered.

"Oh, that's harsh!" chided the youth. "You think he doesn't have a little grace in him?"

Arya shook her head, "noo, Lupin has aged," she said, "once you age, who know how old he is, you lose rhythm- everything," she said.

Mildmay lifted his shoulder. "Maybe we look on things differently. He doesn't look 'aged' to me. Worn, tired, yeah. But... mnn. I don't know how to describe it." He could tell the Professor was poor, but that was another thing Mildmay liked about the DADA teacher. "How 'bout McGonagal? Think she'll turn up her heels in a Scottish jig for us?"

Arya shook her head, "nah. She's too old. She seems more of a waltz-y person," Arya said, "McGonagal appears graceful, I'm sure she can dance something."

"Too old, too aged - you do set a lot by how many years a person has. I'd prefer them older than younger." He wasn't sure weather that was his pureblood talking or personal preference. His mother, her husband and even his grandfather encouraged him to admire and respect the older generations. "Wizards don't die off as soon as muggles do, you know. Age means a lot less - or it should do. I dislike the muggle culture of youth-worship." He grimaced, recalling the tell-oh-fizz-on he had seen once.

"Oh, this is dancing-wise, Mildmay," Arya said, "older, mature adults have much more knowledge that can be passed down, unlike someone young. But if I had the choice to be in a room of a dance with young people or older people, I would choose the younger group, unless that younger group is five, then the older group," Arya said.

His eyebrows went up as he thought about that. "And you'd be welcome to them. The older crowd would have had years more dancing practice - they wouldn't step on your feet half so often." He smiled and rubbed a hand through his hair. "It's getting late. I need to sleep... have you seen Messire around? She's in a mood with me."
